Clunking issue

My 97 Aerostar e4wd clunks whenever I shift into drive or reverse, it'll also shift a little hard sometimes . Is it possible that the transfer case could be wore out? It's obviously been serviced before as it has rtv just caked onto the mating surfaces.

If it were me, first thing I would check is the transmission fluid

The fluid isn't fresh, it isn't completely used up but it's not bright.

When you say "used up", do you mean it's low?

You should definitely drain and refill with proper fluid before proceeding. Follow the procedure here:
