I baught a 1997 F150 4.2L 5-Speed 4X4 mid-late last year. Later last year I was messing around on the farm in 4H and thought I would try 4L (which worked fine during a test drive before I bought it) as soon as I let the clutch out a loud clank came from under the cab followed by a noise like a slipping chain as I crawled up the hill. I stopped as soon as possible and pulled it out of 4X4 and tryed 4H again once on top the hill. 4H works fine but in 4L it does it again or won't even move. Any ideas what might be wrong?
thanx
I assume you have the manual transfer case. when you shift into 4l make sure the lever is pulled all the way back, when going from N to 4l in the transfer case there is a long throw (about the same distance as going from 4h to N) if dont get the lever all the way back the chain will engage but the transfer case does not lock in and can pop out of gear. I normally shift into 4l then back to N real quick then back into 4l, the first shift will align the gears and the second will get them meshed together and locked. Another thing is that when you shift into 4l pull the lever back quickly and hard.
I hate to wake up a dead thread but my problem has returned and the "double shift" process dosn't work any more. i checked and lubed the linkage and every thing seems to be in working order. My uncle fears it may be a cracked or broken shift fork in the t-case, because it happens every now and then in 4H now. is there a way to confirm this before tearing apart the driveline? thanx again
