tailgate gap

I'm getting a lot of soil and very small rocks stuck in the tailgate drain holes while I'm cleaning out the bed of what ever material I haul. Do you guys have any tips to stop all the material from enter the tailgate drain holes?

I have the tailgate step and I'm worried that may cause problems down the road

I bought a BedRug bed mat. It’s a flat hard foam bed mat that has a built in tailgate flap and a piece of material that bridges the gap between the bed and the tailgate. It’s not a rug material, it holds up to hauling bikes and moving stone/dirt.
