Hi everyone,
I was wanting to change the oil on a 1996 Aerostar v6 4.0l, however i can not seem to find the oil plug(the thing that when you take it off, your oil starts dripping all over the place). If someone could help me locate that, it would be much appreciated...
It should be on the very bottom of the engine at the bottom of the big ugly oil pan looking thing. I don't know how to describe it but if you lay under the vehicle there should be a 5/8' or 15mm bolt in the front edge of the pan. Should be the lowest bolt on the motor (under the starter I think.
The bolt on mine has a 1/2" head (and shaft), located toward the rear of the bottom of the pan, almost at the transmission. There is a cross-member just beneath it, so you will need an extension on a socket to reach it. Ford used an O-ring on the bolt to seal the hole between the bolt and the case. Sometimes the O-ring will tear up as you're removing the bolt, so be prepared to get a new one. I think a 1/2" diameter by 1/16" thick size will work.
When you remove the bolt, the oil can hit the cross-member, and get all over the place. I recommend that you use a large pan under it.
