Just replaced the power steering pump and gear box and it whines like crazy when turning. Its full on fluid which looks clear. I replaced both the pump and gear box at the same time so i don't think its dirty fluid since it is brand new. Any ideas? Its really annoying.
I can only assume you've got air in the system somewhere. That said, I will only run a Saginaw pump in any Ford I own. I've converted to one in my 4.9 (easy), as well as a Lima 2.3 Turbo (not so easy).
I don't know how air could be inside since it is not a closed system. The driving I've done since replacement should have purged any air. And it is not foamy as mentioned in My4FordTrucks' reply.
I've been doing some reading and people are using synthetic red ATF instead of powersteering fluid. I switched to a redhead steering gear box which has red fluid inside when I took it out. Maybe ATF may be the solution?
If not, where can I find Saginaw pumps? What I'm seeing is for Chevys..

The factory fill was with type F ATF not p/s fluid.
You will need the bracket, pump and pressure hose out of either a 5.0 or 5.8 van. I am not sure when the vans went from “V” belts to serpentine but you can easily find that information in one of the many threads about the swap. The mounting holes for the Saginaw pump is different than the Ford pump and the line also does not swap
over. Obviously you can procure a new line for a van instead of using the old one.
Put this in the pump. If anything will stop a Ford, or any other type of PS pump from whining, this will do it. I've used it for decades on many, many vehicles with 100% success. What have you got to lose except a few dollars. I had an Areostar you could hear many blocks away. Stopped it within 10 minutes, and ran for probably close to 8 years after that before it was sold to someone that didn't live close by, with a silent PS pump the whole time.
It's in my F150 now, and has been for probably close to 15 years. Completely silent PS pump on it since.
NAPA carries it, and also the same stuff under their NAPA brand. Some O'reilly stores have it.
Yes, find an E-series van with a 5.0L or 5.8L engine and take the pump and pump bracket from it. I was able to reuse the same belt. You will need to change the power steering pressure hose to a van hose. I got everything for my 1995 F150 5.0L off of a 1994 E-150 with a 5.8L. I think I paid $40 or $50 for it.
Just got my new pump. Desolate motorsports sells a new one with a bracket, lines and new belt. I plan on putting it in this weekend. Did you use ATF or Power Steering Fluid for the Saginaw pump.
