True, but the point isn't that you never have to define a word or phrase, but that once it's understood you can use it as shorthand for the idea. This is how language works.

Nicknames are just like any other word - a tool for communicating an idea. So, just like all words, a person learns what a nickname means and then uses it to communicate.
