Fox Shock Length

Wanted to get some opinions in this......I have a 17 SD w snow plow prep and a 1.5in spacer lift. Which are the appropriate length fox shocks. The ones for 0-1.5 in of lift or 2-3.5? Thinking that the snow plow prep is already about 1" over true stock, then I've lifted another 1.5in. Or is that diff insignificant?

I have the 0-1.5in shocks on now, wondering if the the longer shock would make the truck ride in a more appropriate part of the shock's stroke.

TIA

That doesn't make a difference, the goal with shock length is to work with your suspension travel without bottoming out, and ideally not limiting travel. If the 0-1.5" shock isn't limiting your suspension travel than its fine. The shock shouldn't perform or ride any different just based on its position in its stroke.

The biggest issue in my experience is bottoming out a shock. That will kill a shock quickly. They seem to handle full extension much better. So if the shock speced for more lift works without bottoming out than go for it, but I wouldn't expect any difference whatsoever in ride or performance, and may be entirely unnecessary if you arent jumping or flexing out your suspension. My guess is that the 2-3.5" shock would be too long, requiring bump stop extensions to avoid bottoming the shock, but matbe not, might be perfect.

I have found that the fox and rancho charts do not really provide a good match for late model trucks.

best is to measure your shock length installed at rest.

your best bet is to remove a front and remove a rear

determine the compression length and determine the extension length.

analyze this info to see if it makes sense.....meaning decide where you want your new shocks to rest at, determine the math needed. go to the fox website and if you click on the shock part number you are thinking about..it will take you to a tech data page on that shock.

the reason I say this is becuase I bought a set of fox 2.5's all around for an f-350 using the 0-1.5" pick off. when I installed the shocks I only had 1/4 shock lenght exposed...meaning..3/4ths of the shock was in the shock body. wasnt happy with that.

fox did not have a solution and said their charts are general guides due to variences in equipment in trucks.

so I had to do a 3" front lift and 4" rear lift just to get my shocks to center.

my truck looked like a skateboard.

proceed with cuation.

and yes...the shocks bottomed out real easy before the lift kit.
