I bought a 76' f250 highboy last year and haven't had much time for it, it has a 360. The fuel pump seems to have died recently (smelled of gas ever since I bought it and seemed to leak though I couldn't track where). Dumping gas in the carb sees it start with no problem. I changed the oil, oil filter, and was going to put on the new fuel pump (amf0076) but I can't get the dang thing in with sufficient alignment to bolt it in (the lever seems to be under the cam but I can't push it up forcefully enough for alignment). Is there a known distributor position I can crank the engine to that puts the cam high for ease of install? I'm grateful for any other advice on how to get it in.
I've done a fuel pump on my samurai but had no issue like this, I am a noob generally speaking but after several hours of grunting I've had no luck.
Thanks for the response, just to make sure I understand, you just mean to crank the engine for a second and then to see by trying if it fits? I gave this a shot yesterday but will persist for some more tries. Should it be fairly easy to place generally speaking?
Here's a look at what your working with. Image from the WWW.
Its cool to see the inside of this one, a bit different from the samurai. I suppose no one knows what distributor position would correlate to the right position for the eccentric? Or if there's some indicator for top dead center or the like? I'll try rotating what the fan flanges to in neutral. I'm gonna see if I can get a long screwdriver in there so I can feel for the eccentric high point as I rotate it. Will have a go later today and let y'all know.

Thanks for all the replies!
Put the engine at TDC Compression stroke Cylinder #1 and the eccentric will be in the correct position to ease fuel pump installation. This applies to ALL Ford motors.
If you eat yer Wheaties, can muscle it in there regardless. It took me a long time to figure out it's a heck of a lot easier to have the eccentric placed "just so" though.
Just bump it over till it installs by hand without resistance, or find TDC on #1. One thing that is important, new fuel pumps are notorious these days for excessive output pressure. It only takes a minute to check this with a mechanic's vacuum gauge.

today I cranked it over with the fuel pump in pressed up against the cam and could feel it move up, then I was able to seat it without issue.
Is there danger in a fuel pump with excessive pressure?
Thanks to everyone for the kind words and info. I ate some wheaties and then a whole can of spinach and was able to get it in (though none of that stuff helped). I used a 15/16 to turn it over with the fuel pump in and felt for when the cam went high then it wasn't too hard at all. I must've been at the low point before as I was muscling the hell out of it. It started and ran for a bit then died and now is being very reticent to start and won't stay running except for when I lay on the gas pedal. I assume it is a carb issue as I can see with my clear filter that gasoline is getting pumped and I can see gas coming out of the carb.
I had to do the same to my Carter carb. I got my kit on eBay for half that cost. I watched a few videos on YouTube to get me through it. Runs great now.
I also need to do my vehicle registration and need a crank case breather line to air filter kit for the driver side valve cover. The K&N round air filter doesn't have a fitting to receive it so I bought
but on Edelbrock's website they saw this isn't CARB compliant (cali emissions). I'm wondering if anyone else has dealt with this or knows what the right piece would be if this isnt it.
