I was checking my trans fluid level, and discovered that my A/C was blowing cold air into the engine compartment. My A/C works great inside my cab. The “insulation” that surrounds the A/C bo don’t know the actual name) is a bit tattered and needs attention. I don’t know if there is a crack in that “box” or if the missing insulation is what's causing the cold air leakage. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks
P.S. I guess my “engine cooling mod” is working though since my trucks’ coolant gauge is almost pegged at a lower temperature even in 110* AZ heat LOL
If your AC is cooling great in the cab, and it's leaking at the evaporator box on the firewall, you've got some good AC! When I was back in phoenix, my Bronco couldn't keep up to well cooling the whole cab if it was parked outside. Now that the windows are tinted more, it may help.
Anyways, you shouldn't really have any cool are escaping from the evap box. There could be a crack somewhere, or maybe some of the hardware keeping the cover on is missing. I'd look into that. There isn't really any harm letting AC into the engine bay, it's just a waste really.
As for your temp being at 110* in AZ, I'd try and get a cheap laser thermometer at harbor freight to actually check the temp (on the thermostat housing should give a decent reading. If you truck is running really cold (not around 195), it actually won't be as efficient and could be worse for the motor. It's better to get it to run as close to normal operating temperature as possible. Obviously cooler is better, but you don't want it running that cold.
I’ll check to make sure the hardware (bolts, etc) are all in place. When I had my hand near the transmission dipstick, I could feel cold air blowing on my hand. Seems inefficient for sure. I’ll also looks to make sure there are no cracks in the box. What could I use as “insulation” material? Mine is a bit shredded somehow and that evaporator box isn’t shielded entirely anymore from the exhaust pipes, header area. Thanks!
autozone/advanced auto, sell a turbo wrap, that is sticky back, wipe box with alcohol, and it will stick good, your seal around box may be deteriorated, see pic below
