It's funny, looking at the pictures... it's amazing they can pack 7.3L of displacement in such a small engine block, leave out the OHC, and still manage to create heads and intake that make it look as tall as a Ford Modular 3-valve V10
Still, the ram-air style intake straight down through the head is extraordinary. Probably GREAT for low-end torque.
I happen to have an 2008, CCLB 4x4, with a blown up 6.4, been contmplating a Cummins swap, would much rather swap in a Godzilla motor.
Wonder what the issues will be getting it to work with the 5R110, and the body computer?
I'd love to put this engine in my Bullnose truck, but I wonder, any chance of mating a manual trans to it? No factory option for that meaning no flywheel available unless an aftermarket solution.
Well, if it proves out to be as reliable as the V10, they'll put it in the medium-duty trucks. Although, these days, do they even put manuals in the gassers?
On edit: If they haven't already put it in the medium-duty trucks, that is.

The V10 went the way of the Dodo bird and the 7.3 will replace the V10 in every application. With 7.3's smaller package it could open some doors to install this engine in other applications. Can you say Gen 3 Raptor!
I am curious to know if anyone would have an idea of what would be involved if I pulled my 5.4 with 305010 current miles on it and swapped in the new 7.3 motor. My truck is a 2001 Excursion Limited 4X4. Will I have to get a new ECU or can the dealer flash it to the new motor spec requirements? How much am I going to have to rewire or is there a harness that will work? I suppose the hardest question to ask is, how much of a pain is this going to be? I have the 4R100 transmission in there right now and its as solid as the day we bought it, but I will most definitely have it rebuilt prior to adding a motor that has twice the stock horse power and torque. I'll most likely be making the swap in the January-March time frame so there is plenty of time for some investigation/education. My mechanical background is in aircraft maintenance although I have been wrenching on my cars since I was 16. (21 years)
You will need an engine controller for the 7.3. You may need a seperate controller for your transmission.
You will have substantial rewiring to marry those up and make things work.
Expect your timeframe to be January 2020 to March of 2021.
Lots of swaps are going to happen with this motor. But so far, you will be breaking new ground with yours. There is a Fox body Mustang swap out there, maybe more than one. Some info would transfer I suppose.
I agree that it is going to take a while to complete. My mistake on giving the impression that it would only take 3 months. The truck itself is going to be overhauled...hopefully. We would love to have it repainted as well as having the rockers replaced. I’ll address the common driveline bind as well as rebuilding the front axle. The front drive line binds, pops, jumps and shutters when the 4 wheel drive is activated. The front locking hubs and crap too. They seized. Hopefully they can be rebuilt because their pretty pricey.
Do you have any ideas where I would be able to start looking for the ecu or should I just run over to the Ford dealer? I do want to see the engine in person anyway so I can get an idea of the engine mount pattern and possibly get some measurements for the potential mock up.

I'd think it will fit, but as this is a new engine and new swap, expect to have some hurdles w/no prior first hand knowledge from shops or members here. I don't know if Ford corporate, maybe someone in the engine crate division, could help, but as much prior knowledge/investigation as possible would be advised.
I like your idea of replacing the 5.4, and while you have many miles on yours, that engine has been an issue in various forms through out it's history, so I think replacing with the 7.3 is a great idea. Please post a build thread when you do it.
Wow, great news if Summit has it. There's got to be a solution for ECM controls and harness but it might take a talk with Ford Motorsports to sort that out. Or maybe there's a genius somewhere in a private shop that knows.
You know, I go on the Ford.com website and "build and price" F250 Super Duty from time to time, and a supercap shortbed 4x4 XL, with this engine, I cannot get the price lower than ~$50K with the bare options I'd want. I'm sure you could take the order sheet and shop around dealers and get below that, but with taxes and whatnot would still get back to it or more all in. So, I'm thinking, I've got that '85 F150 supercab longbed, lifted 2", 33" tires. Hmmmm, lol, that could fit right in!

I do it a lot, but I also look for a regular cab, 4x4, don't care if it's an XL, etc. So far, that would get me around the same price as my Taurus SHO. My last SHO I got a SUPER deal on, being a leftover and all, so it doesn't really compare. But sticker-for-sticker, it's around the same as my Taurus.
On the other hand, that's also with locking diffs front and back, an electronics system that is almost (if not more than) what my Taurus has, and the 7.3. Sounds like a match made in heaven.
I did this once before. Got my '96 t-bird brand-new. Drove it stock, then tuned it, put a 3.73 rear in it, and generally drove the crap out of that thing. Loved it. Eventually started looking for a truck again (because my highboy was biting the dust), got into my 2001 F250 V10.
Once that love affair was over, I got into a 2013 Taurus. Then a 2016. And now, a 2018. I wanted to keep the 2018, and I really drove a hard bargain to get the lease buyout as low as possible. But I'm wondering... an F250 with the 7.3 might make that pendulum swing back the other way.
