Horn grounding

In the midst of getting my horn working from the column. PO added a separate button in and completely ditched the wiring at the column so it’s a pain to sort through. I have the relay and everything else good to go, I think the relay grounds through the column but I don’t know how the grounding works it’s way up from the bottom of the column to the top. Can someone explain the connections? I can’t find it in my wiring diagram or shop manual. Thanks

There are two horn brushes - one in the insulator in the steering wheel and one in the turn signal switch insulator. When you push the horn button it compresses the two horn brushes and the ground path is through the steering column. For that reason the 2WD trucks with the rag joint connector at the bottom end of the steering column also needs a ground strap. Some of the aftermarket replacement rag joints don't have the grounding strap so a wire can be added from one side to the other.

So then from the rag joint it grounds to the steering box and then the chassis? Or where does it go once it passes the rag

Yes, that's correct. Through the steering gear to the frame.

Another question, does anyone know if the horn buttons, just the button part, from f100s and mustangs attract to the wheel in the same way?

i have a 1966 deluxe mustang wood grain wheel I’ll be using with modification to use with the horn assembly in the column, but want a button like what would come on the standard cab f100
