Well, I was bored today and decided to take a look at the cruise control. everything looked original and in place so I zip tied the little lamp chain to the throttle cable because I don't have that little bracket on mine for it to hook up.
I get in the truck, find a nice flat stretch of road. Get it up to like 50 and hit set. nothing happens. I let off the gas and then with a little jolt the thing holds 50. I was ecstatic. Cruising along with my 1981 F250 with Cruise control, until the next stop sign came. first I hit off, expecting the normal engine braking. nothing. Then I start breaking and I can feel the engine fight back, wanting to rev up. So I shift down and pull over. When I putt the truck in neutral, I can hear the engine revving up. I quickly turn it off and pop the hood. As expected, the throttle is hung open. I gently tapped the throttle and it just snaps back closed. So it was hung up on itself. I am guessing the cruise control cable was not being pulled back out all the way. So I have two questions.
First: As the lamp chain can be adjusted, how tight should it be? I have bearly any slack in there, is that maybe the reason why it hung open?
Secondly: Do I need a second throttle return spring, apart from the one on the throttle cable? I am just a little concerned that that would put too much strain on the cruise control
Thirdly: I know its called Fingertip Speed Control
I added a extra return spring on my throttle plate in the corner there is a hole , do you have a vacuum canister ? It will work better , also try a set speed with your foot under the brake pedal with upward pressure , if it accelerates better ,the dump valve is leaking , adjust valve about 2 turns closer , make sure your speed sensor is ok no broken wires , mine will set at about 1000, in most gears and works great .i have a non return valve on the canister i made .Cheers
