I can spin the tires on a damp road with my 2005 dually V10 which has 227,000 miles due to the 4:30 gears (all-stock under the hood, even the air box). If your engine runs well, gearing makes a world of difference.
Is there a way to increase the power of this engine without breaking the bank? I feel like for such a big motor, it has so little power.
Tell us some more about your rig.
The early pre-PI motors are down a bit on power compared to PI 2V V-10s and the 3V motors have even more go in them.
How is you current maintenance? How old are the plugs and boots? Clean air and fuel filters? How is the exhaust?
What gear ratio does it have and how big are the tire's? The 6.8 likes to rev where it's power is, too tall of gears and or tire's will make getting to that rev sweet spot harder and performance will suffer.
I have the above mentioned mods on my V-10 and without question the biggest performance increase came from the deeper gears, I went from stock 3.73s to 4.88s with 35" tires for an effective 4.39 ratio. I would rank my 5Star custom tunes second mainly because my EX is our tow rig for a 12K TT and the changes the tunes make to the timing and trans make my towing soooo much better than stock. Third would be the Banks headers and full flow Y pipe, they helped a bit across the entire RPM range, especially when pulling grades with the TT on the hitch. My factory 3" exhaust piping is still in place along with my cat but the muffler has been replaced with a 3030XL muffler which has in my opinion the best sound behind a V-10.
