Rather than replace the ignition resistor wire....is it possible to run a coil with an internal resistor? And if so, what are some suggestions as to brand and part number?
Are you still running a stock distributor? Is it a points type, or electronic?
If not stock, what is it?
Not saying you can't do it, because you can. Just wondering about the rest of the system because it may make a difference on which coil you choose, and/or whether it can be done at all.
Not always.
The box may get 12v, but the coils get reduced voltage more often than not.
There may be a way to substitute a coil with a different resistance internally and still have the module live a long and healthy life, but I'm not sure what that would be. Lots of Dura Spark experts here though (and maybe you're one of them) so they can correct that if I'm wrong.
I use only Motorcraft parts when ever possible. Most of the big box auto parts are China junk. Hope that is all it was.
Also made in China!! The problem with stuff made in China is not the Chinese fault, they use the spec's given to them by US parts sellers. They are the ones to blame for crappy parts!!
Agree. Without knowing the whole process, because I'm not privy to all that stuff, I've always maintained that the Chinese can build stuff just as good as anyone else in the new facilities and if they have the right people. In the sixties we made fun of the whole "made in Japan" thing. Figured they were inferior to anything made in the US. And to a certain extent that was true for a time. But I'd absolutely LOVE to get some part made in Japan any more!
But as long as our "manufacturers" keep specifying stuff based on price and what the minimum is they can get away with, that's what we get. And as long as we as consumers base 90% of our purchase decisions on price, that's what our companies are going to continue to ask for.
I'm as guilty as anyone, but I also paid for an $80 (wholesale cost) Ford starter relay from Volvo/Penta that's made in the USA, for pretty obvious reasons. Hopefully it hasn't had corners cut being made here too, like some parts have. Made in the US does not mean what it used to in every case anymore either unfortunately.
I say I'm guilty, but even now that I've gone over to the dark side and am an Amazon Prime customer, most of my multiple-choice purchases tend to be middle-of-the-road, to higher priced. I've pretty much had it with the lowest price available on just about anything. But especially auto parts! To the point I just ignore the lowest priced stuff automatically. Even if it's got the coolest pictures!
And even when paying more you still get boned on the purchase now and then.
