dual tank selector valve

ok, I've run both tanks empty without ever switching to the rear tank (F150, 1988, 5.0, 302, EFI). I guess the selector valve is shot. Any ideas how much Ford charges for new ones? I guess I can't use the one from JCWhitney (http://www.jcwhitney.com/item.jhtml?ITEMID=4660), as it is electric and the one I have isn't. Any ideas how I can get the Ford part number? Until what year were those tanks selector valves used? I might go and look for one on the wrecking yards.
Thanks a lot!

LAST EDITED ON 19-Dec-00 AT 01:00 PM (EST)[p]Anyone from 1987-1995 (?) should fit your truck. You might want to verify this with Ford. I am not sure about earlier models as the Fuel system was different (lower operating pressures on the carbed models as apposed to EFI)The dealer should be able to give you an idea of fitment between years though.

dual tank selector valve

Many years ago, my dad added an extra fuel tank to his truck. He just used a manual fuel valve. Drilled a hole in the floor between the seat and the door. When it came time to switch tanks, he just reached down with his left hand and flipped the valve. A lot more reliable than an electric valve. He didn't have a fuel gauge on the extra tank, he would just wait until the engine sputtered a little, then switched tanks. That wouldn't be good for a newer truck. I understand it's tough on the fuel pump to run them dry.

Hey John
You Caught Me! lol. I was showing a friend of mine this site from his computer and had to check out the boards. New York was great. I didn't realize I missed it there. Hows the Snow in Jersey? Getting some use out of the 4x4 I bet.

Thats Cool. The Detroit Lockers are great. I had a 78 F150 that had a 3.55 rear with a factory Detroit Locker. That truck got around in the snow really good.

Brad, didn't get the u-joint done today had to help my sister she broke down then I put on a fan clutch boy what a job but it made a really big difference in the truck no more mister nice guy at the light this thing is really fast for a diesel!!!!! I couldn't beleive that a fan clutch would change that much on this truck but it shifts different takes off better and runs a whole lot quieter. gotta go post this in the diesels!!!!!

Hey John,
I hear that. I changed a water pump on mine about 2 months ago. What a PITA. Hope I don't have to do that again for a while. I still have to put the new injectrs in mine. I haven't done it yet. There is nothing wrong with mine but I have 8 brand new ones that a buddy of mine had from his 6.9 and I figured what the hey mights well change them. Take it easy

My (1989) selector valve was covered by a recall. I don't about yours. You might check.

dual tank selector valve

Hello, could you please email me the info on how to check about
the recall for my 1989 Ford F-150 "dual tank selector valve" ?
I'm not sure if my problem is this or not but I do know that my
external fuel pump keeps burning up after not using the truck for
one day. Any help or knowledge on how to check the
"dual tank selector valve" ?

Thanks!!!!
Eric

Ah, apparently I missed David89's post. I've already ordered (and received) a new Dual Tank Selector Valve from http://fordpartsonline.com (48$). I'll put it in and see what happens.

zcuttingedge - I don't think that's a problem of the selector valve. Maybe you have a leakage somwhere that slowly lets air into your pump, frying it. The selector vlave is pretty compact, it seems difficult to imagine how the valve itself could leak.
