Putting a new clutch in my 65 F100. While trans is out was going to replace speedometer gear on output shaft.
Speedo hasnt worked in 25/30 years. Took tail housing off and removed crappy snap ring.
Now for the dummy mistake.
Trans was falling over, I reached and grabbed the front shifter arm to keep it from falling.
It shot the output shaft bearing out of the back of case. Wouldnt slide all the way back in. Liked @ 3/16".
So I think the 1 or more needle bearings between input & output shaft have fell out.
Took top cover & front bearing cover off. Input shaft & bearing will only come out 1/4" or so then bind up.
So my question is how to get input shaft & bearing out so I can restack needle bearings?
Most of the time you have to remove the counter shaft inner shaft to allow the counter shaft to drop down to allow room for the input shaft to come out the front. This means all the needle bearings in the counter shaft will fall out, so unfortunately you will end up having to take the entire transmission apart to re stack all the needle bearings throughout the transmission.
Thanks
I found a pdf of the service manual a little bit ago.
It said as you did about the counter shaft dropping
down to get input shaft out. It mentioned a dummy
shaft to hold bearings in place. I remembered making
a shaft when I put syncros in a mopar 4 speed many
years ago.
So I turned down an .865 shaft a couple minutes ago.
the manual had 2 at .500 different lengths. Cut it
to the longest. If that doesnt work cut it shorter.
I hope the 1/4" roll pin holding counter shaft in
drives all the way out.
Does any one know?
I rebuilt my toploader 4 speed a few years ago, and I recall using a socket extension to knock out the counter gear's shaft. I don't recall a retainer pin, as I think the tail housing kept it in. Once you remove the shaft, the counter gear cluster should fall to the bottom of the case, and the input and output shafts can be removed.
To install, pack all the roller bearing pins into their journals with grease to hold them in place. Lay the cluster gear on the bottom of the case to make room to install the input gear and output shaft/gear assembly. I used the recommended method of pushing a 1/2" PVC pipe through the counter gear to hold it in place when re-installing its shaft.
The counter gear shaft is a couple inches shorter than the case.
There is a boss away from the back of case to hold rear of shaft.
Thats where roll pin is holding shaft. Can get to it thru fill plug hole.
