risen from the dead

Twenty two years ago when my father passed away his pickup was parked. I finally got around to checking it out and it started barely, like our PSD's on one bank. I did numerous things to it but finally pulled the valve covers. Seven push rods were bent like prezels and the valves etc. were full of rust. Even with a valve compressor I couldn't get the retainers out to check out the valves. I went thru a couple cans of penetrating oil over a couple of weeks. Finally after the spring was compressed I would take a screw driver and hammer and hit the top of the valve and it would break loose. The seven valves that were stuck I worked them up and down putting grease on the valves and finally got them to move just with my fingers. The brakes were in bad shape and the fuel tank full of rust. I got the brakes working and waiting on a sending unit for the tank. I've driven it up the drive way with a long hose using a five gallon tank. The 4by4 works and I'm cleaning up all the mice s!it. Its just a 302 and its under powered. Its got a C6 trans which I should change the fluid and check the front and rear ends. Transfer case? Does it share the C6 fluid, I don't know much about 4by4's but sure am glad to get this one running!

It seems to run good but who knows because of all that rust. My theory is who ever put the valve covers on last just used silicone instead of cork gaskets letting in moisture. No body rust!!!!

Hi Glenn! The front and rear diffs take 80-90w gear oil, the transfer case takes mercron/dextron. It might be best to just get a new fuel tank because of the rust. Are you still up in the Black Hill this summer? From the back ground in the pic you are.

Thanks Tom, I tried a old trick I read about. I put a chain in the tank and rolled it around for awhile, lol. It looks pretty clean but I had to order a new sending unit. I hope that doesn't come back to bit me. Yep, going to hang out in the Black Hills all summer.

Glad you were able to get the old girl running again. Those trucks with sentimental value are really special. It should be fun to kick around in!

Todd, is that you? lol All is good here Todd and I hope you guys are doing good. Kids are growing up fast I bet!

Yea Ben, it is a good feeling getting the old 'bullnose' running again. Its a little hard for me thinking the whole time that my Dad is looking down on me working on it. Its weird!

Adam, its really hard for me to believe its 40 years old. The thing I screwed up is I just tore it apart without labeling those damn vacuum lines. It doesn't idle right but I'll figure it out.

good on ya for bring the old girl back to life Glenn.
transfer case uses the same mercon/detron trans fluid as the transmission uses, but it does not interact with the trans.
there is no fluid connection in the t-case adapter. just the coupler.

At the risk of insulting, the last time the truck ran it consumed actual gasoline. Might want to check on what things need to swap-out to better handle corn laced fuel.
