Hey all,
So i have a MAJOR issue.
What do you all use for the chain for the side mount tool box? I don't have a close junk yard that gets many of our trucks. I also can't seem to find a good example of that. Was is screwed in or just hooked on both sides.
The other item i have been hunting down is a new antenna. I would like to find one of those spring style. I have read a lot of reviews and it seems like the cheapy Chinese ones don't last and break quickly. Any leads on either would be great.
I'd think that some good strong picture-hanging chain would do the trick, but I don't know what the factory used. You're talking about holding up the compartment door when it's open?
At least by '78 or '79 they were using braided cable. At each end was a crimped-on ring terminal anchor.
Like picture hanging "wire" rather than the chain.
Would be the same as the glove box, right? Or was that just the old Broncos I'm thinking of?
I posted up a pic of mine last year. Let me see if I can find it on the computer.
Found 'em, but they were just of the latch and did not show the cable.
I think I removed it for safe-keeping (meaning it would then be lost for years!) but I'll go out and check in a bit.
What you're looking for is:
Cable, door check, quarter panel tool storage compartment.

Unfortunately I couldn't locate any dealer or obsolete parts supplier that has one.
I've both crimped and soldered ring terminals on regular 12ga stranded wire for this on other vehicles. Works fine, unless you're going for a 100 point, factory correct restoration.
That would work great I would think. Even with smaller gauge too probably.
Should not be too hard in most areas to find the products to make the original style too. Frame shop maybe for the wire, or even the home center or hardware store. Not sure who might carry the same type of crimp type ring, but as you said, even an electrical one would work for at least awhile.
I think the type used by Ford (and control cables and such) would be longer lived, but can't say from experience.
You could make a loop in the ends of a new cable and secure them together with cable crimps as well. The resolve will depend on if you are looking for form or function.
That is the original seal for the tool box door.
I have another image of it's cross-section if anyone needs to see what it's like. I assume they are reproduced these days, but have not looked lately. Been meaning to call Steele Rubber Products to see if they have all that stuff and also what they have for the early Bronco doors that does not make them hard to close.
Might want to check Lowes / Home Depot Hardware section for plastic shielded galvanized wire, the type used on roll-up garage doors but thinner gauge and with a plastic shield. Like 1 TonBasecamp mentioned, use a heavy gauge crimping style terminal and add solder after crimping, like a swedge socket set of slings. Also might want to check Grainger Industrial Supply, they carry a huge product line.
