So i recently purchased a 1989 f150 with a straight 6 and a 5 speed manual tranny......the rear gas tank had a whole in it and was halfway filled with old gas....and the main tank had old gas and sludge on the sending unit...i know i will be replacing both sending units but the front tank is there anything i can do to clean it out and use it again theirs no damage to it. I already got a used rear tank for $14 that basically brand new. I heard using a power washer with a little simple green, or baking soda and vinegar but was wondering if anyone has had to deal with this or just replaced the tank .

I just replace the tank. They are not that expensive, just did a rear one on a friends truck for the same reason and it was about $100 shipped.

I have soldered 2 fuel tanks. I washed them with Purple Power and Dawn dish soap. Worked great. After I soldered them, I used JB Weld over the rough areas and then smoothed everything out with some sandpaper. Still holding fuel 3 years later.

It depends on the size of the hole and how bad the rust is.
