Fuel System Question

So, ready to start my 223. Fires right up with gas down carburetor or with starter fluid. Can't get any fuel from fuel system. Pulled mechanical pump and pretty sure installed correctly. Tank and lines were all empty during rebuild. Does fuel system need to be primed? Can I use my brake bleeder vacuum tool to pull gas through the lines to the pump? This is on my 1959 f350 with gas tank in cab. Think I'll disconnect line at tank and pump inlet and blow out line first. Had all lines taped but it was down a long time.

Do you have a filters in between the tank and pump? Do you have the pump with the filter in the bottom? If you disconnect line at pump gas should run out with tank level being higher. Is there gas in the tank? Not trying to be funny but hey, you never know? If you disconnect at carb does gas come out when you run the starter?

I put four gallons in tank. Pump has no filter. I have a large inline filter between pump and carburetor. I'm not getting gas out of pump inlet or anywhere else. Fuel line comes out of top of tank. Wouldn't lines need to be full to syphon gas out of tank? I started engine twenty times at least, putting gas in carburetor. Nothing comes out at carburetor. The old gas was in tank a long time so I emptied it before putting tank back in truck.

Does fuel come out if you disconnect line and put it in a container and turn over engine? Whats your fuel pressure? These trucks only need ~4psi to the carb. If youre getting gas coming out check the flow rate.

With an air hose and lite pressure can you blow back towards the tank from the inlet of the fuel pump?
When you do do you hear bubbles in the fuel tank or just air?
I wouldn't think the pump should have a problem sucking the fuel up the puck up tube.

Disconnect the line from your tank to pump and Put air to the line listen for bubbling in the tank. Its possible your flex line under the tank to cab is leaking and not allowing the prime.

Actually, I found one of the hose connections loose. Tightened it but no change. I disconnected hard line from top of tank and blew into the fitting and could hear bubbles so pick up tube not laying in tsnk bottom and fuel above pick up. Disconnected pump inlet and blew out line. Seemed plugged at first but clear now. Replaced inlet rubber hose. No gas to pump. I hooked up vacuum gauge to pump inlet and cranked engine. Reads slightly but drops back to zero as engine turns. Does this mean pump is bad or I have an air leak in line somewhere?
As it turns out it was a bad pump. Neighbor gave me an electric pump and regulator. All in and running. Fine tuning ignition and carburetor tomorrow. Once I get those $#@% doors adjusted I can put the old girl to work.

Glad you got it going. Simple trucks but many little ways to mess with your head.

It was a crazy morning. Every thing I found wrong should have caused the problem. The pump has sat dry during the long build process. Our environmentaly friendly California gas doesn't help either. Pump was new six years ago but suspect a hole in diaphragm.

I am having trouble adjusting the hinges. I spent two hours on passenger door. Not perfect but closes. I thought driver's would be easier. That door came off donor cab and I had left hinges on door. I thought I could put bolts where I could see marks and be done. With bolts loose door closes but won't latch. When I try to hold door in position and tighten bolts door springs open. After fighting with it several hours I took a break and went back to mechanicals.

Is there some nifty trick to putting the doors back on these trucks? I will be needing to remove and replace mine soon!
