has anyone ever removed a sd steering wheel to replace it w/an upgraded leather wheel from an excursion or similar vehicle? i had one on my wrx i traded in, and don't like the rubber wheel on my sd. how do you remove the airbag, i'm afraid of messing w/mine for fear of setting it off.
do the cruise connections work between the 2 diff. wheels, they look to be placed differently, but the workings seem to be the same?
p.s. i'm not a "ricer," but the wrx was the most fun vehicle i have ever driven (except my gsxr 750,) but i wanted a new truck to tow my 96 cobra drag car.
I replaced my steering wheel when the original one was worn out. 1st thing disconnect your battery(s). This will disable the airbag. On each side of the steering wheel you will see a small "cap" . Pop those out and remove the 7mm bolts inside. This will release the airbag. Gently pull the airbag out untill you can disconect the horn and cruise control connections and remove the airbag. The wheel takes a special tool to remove it "corectly". You can also loosen the big nut in the center (not sure of size) and run it out to the end of the threads , leaving it on the hub, and hit the nut with a hammer while rocking the steering wheel back and forth untill it releases. Remember to leave the nut on or you'll break your nose when the wheel releases! Reverse the order to reinstall, check the horn and cruise and that's it.
