I just got my 2016, I'd like to get a topper for trips and camping. I have a 6 1/2 bed. I'm curious though, does just about any topper fit the tailgate as long as its for a 6 1/2 bed or do I need a topper completely specific to this generation of truck so it will fit the unique tailgate shape?
The problem with the term 6-1/2 foot bed is that it's an approximate number. If you measure inside the box, the length is 78.8 inches. So the shell is going to be at least a couple inches longer than that, and maybe about 5 inches longer, depending on where the hatch comes down.
If you want it to look right, you need the generation specific topper. 6 1/2' boxes vary by a few inches between generations, brands and models. Tailgate and the back of the cab are the areas where you could get functional problems.
If it's a work truck and you aren't too concerned about looks, you can always test-fit some other topper and see how you like it. With two guys they aren't that hard to move around. Just make sure you aren't going to be rubbing the back of the cab when the truck flexes, and that the tailgate/back window can open and close freely.
If you haven’t already figured it out the topper, canopy, camper shell, depending on where you come from on the latest generation a topper needs to be from a 2015-2020 truck for it to fit properly. Took me a couple months to find one for my 6 1/2 foot bed screw. Had it color matched at Maaco. Best of luck in your search.
