49 F1. When I pull headlight switch half out I have running lights in front but not rear. Tail lights work in all other functions. What are we missing here?
Have you checked the wiring against the wiring diagram?
Is there a turn signal unit on the truck?
yes on wiring diagram. Yes there is an after market turn signal unit with emergency flasher which works however flashers only work with ignition switch on. Shouldn't it work without ignition on if stranded?

By "running lights" do you mean parking lights? That would be the first detent in the switch, and is for the front parking lights only, assuming you have the stock headlight switch and it's wired correctly. The second detent (full out) turns off the parking lights and powers up the headlights, dash lights, and taillights.

To clarify, the four way flashers only work with the ignition on. Do the turn signals also need the ignition on to work?
The turn signal units I've installed were always hot and didn't need the ignition switch to be on.

Four-way flashers are usually on a dedicated circuit using a separate flasher unit, operating with the ignition switch off. Regular turn signals require the ignition switch to be on.
