I'm looking for a set of 16" 8-lug wheels for my 49 F-3 that will accept the original hub caps. My understanding is that Ford changed the wheel design sometime around 1967 and the new wheels won't work with the older hub caps.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Do you have a stock rear axle in your 1949 F-3? If so those 16” F-2/250 wheels won’t clear the stock 14” rear drums. Those 14” Lockheed drums are the reason F-3s all came with 17” widow makers. Stu
fabbrofour that's what I put on my F3. A set of stock 16" 8 lug "innies" from an old F2. There is still a possibility of clearance issues if you convert to front disc brakes. There may be some disc brake setups that clear, I'm just not aware of which ones. Just something to be aware of.
Thanks for the info. I'm not planning on converting to discs as the truck is 100% stock except for the rear end. I don't know the specifications on the wheels that are on the truck now except that they're 8 lug 16" that my brother got somewhere when he owned the truck back in the 90's. They worked with the original rear end but must 67 or newer because the hub caps won't stay on. Might see if a wheel shop can make some sort of a weld clip out of spring steel if I can find any from an old F-2. Not having much luck so far.
Fabbrofour, I'm the friend Truckdog/Stu mentioned. I haven't had time to do a wheel count yet. Feel free to contact Firstrider/Denny. I'm sure the guys on FTE will be able to get a set together for you. And then there is price and shipping of course. You might be surprised what it cost, the fact that you can't find them is what drives the price up. Get ahold of Denny and I'll do some checking, should be able to figure something out.
Thanks Mark. Sent a note to Denny. He says he has a set. Hopefully not stored where his location is Pt. St. Lucie , Florida. I'm in Vancouver, Washington, about as far away from Florida as you can get and still be in the lower 48!!
I have 1 in Kalispell that has some surface rust. Still has a tire mounted so I can't see the inside but would assume it's ok. It came with a 52 F2 I have here. I think it might have been the spare because the other 4 wheels are all 67 and later.
If you're ever thru this area you can have it.
Tim
I think that I have 2 that I picked up somewhere over the years. You are welcome to them if these are what you are looking for. Probably 6 to 7 hour drive from Portland. Brian
