Converted trk to P/S now the Saginaw pump is acting up...start the trk within just a couple of minutes running the p/s pump is almost hot enough to burn you to the touch. Anyone had any trouble with these pumps? Lines are also hot all the way back to the gear box.
Gear box is hot and the steering wheel is not close to being smooth...the action of the steering wheel feels like it has lumps in it.
Try bleeding the system. After it cools and with the wheels off the ground (engine off) cycle the steering wheel back and forth several times.
Re-check the level, start the engine and cycle the wheel again.
Cycled the wheels with it running several times but have not tried it with the wheels up and engine off yet....but will. Never had one get that hot before....
I'm not too familiar with these. I did install a Saginaw power steering pump to go with the Borgeson power steering box on my 1969 Mach1. I've had to remove the pressure regulator on the pump to reduce the pressure a little. In the process I noticed if the pressure is too low the steering is "lumpy" as you describe. Anyway, the pressure regulator is easily removable from the pump, maybe there is some debris in it. Saginaw pumps have been around a long time and are fairly reliable.
Another cause of "lumpy" power assist is the spool valve inside the steering box is binding up. That's not a simple fix.
I cycled it with engine off and then started it back and cycled it several more times with wheels off the ground and it seemed to help a lot....Don't know much about the valves in the pump and the correct pressure, may have to just see if it works ok. Trk has been apart and just now getting it back on the road.
