Has anyone here ever heard of an IDI being used in a marine application? I have my eye on a houseboat that has a blown gasser inboard/ outboard in it. The price is right and I happen to have a great running '94 7.3.
lots of my friends that live in the marina have diesel engines on their rigs. I don't know of anyone running an IDI, but i can't see the harm in using one for marine purposes.
back in the day there were quite a few around here. if i remember correctly marine application called 300 HP without turbo.
i would not be surprised to see a few still in the marina as a lot of the old timers still have 30-40-50 year old boats in the water. .
you could always tell the IDI powered boats by the exhaust note.
6.2 is a better option as you can still get Risers and manifolds along with heat exchangers for them, in fact you can still get remaned engines pretty easy.
The Star power units normally ran a Bravo 1 Drive, but you better have some Deep Pockets if you wanna set one up today. They did do both IDI and PSD
That's a joke, unless I've lost my memory, the GM 6.2's grenaded as fast as they could be rebuilt. I remember there was actually a 6.2 club formed in ordered to sue General Motors over their huge failure rate. An ex-Cat mechanic came to work in our shop and he bragged on his until his exploded going home after work. I picked him up and he finally admitted it was the second time.
yeah, that is why they were better in marine apps, at least they could get the boat up on plane.... and like I said you can still get plenty parts for them.
manifolds run about $450.00 each not including the Risers for about another $200.00 each... sure you can shop around and find cheaper or more expensive than what I posted.. it's just a ball park figure anyway and you will most likely be replacing them every couple years if you are running in Salt Water.
IF you get a Thousand hours out of an engine it has done good and probably time to repower anyway, it's a total different world than a vehicle engine for sure.
On a boat you talk Gallons per hour not miles per Gallon
every once in a while there was a good one. but the good ones were very very very very far away from each other.
the only good thing was the cars were already set for a gas engine to be dropped rite in. didn't even have to change the trans.
even the injector pump power wire was long enough to plug rite into the 350 gas engine distributor.
