I am almost ready to start my 1950 226 after a full rebuild. I only have a few questions.
What spark plugs do you guys recommend?
I am going to run "Lucas Oil 10631 SAE 30 High Zinc Engine Break-In Oil" for the break in.. How long do most people run it before the first oil change? I'm planning on Rotella 15w40 for regular use after the break in, anybody recommend anything different?
I run a Champion H10C in my 226. For the life of me, I can't remember why, lol, but it runs well with them. In other words, nothing special sits in the combustion chambers except for a copper core plug
For break in oil, I have rebuilt 2 flat tappet engines in my life and one overhead cam engine, and ran the break-in oil in each for about 500 miles in each situation. You'll pick up quite a bit of contaminants in the oil, even if everything was slathered well with assembly lube. Make sure you get the engine under moderate load while it's in there.
My rebuilt 226 was first started about a year ago and I used the same oil as my machine shop guy recommended for my Mercury 429: Valvoline Racing high zinc 10W30. It's might be a little light for everyday use in these engines and I'll probably follow with a 10W40 when I start running it regularly. Those 226s are fun to hear run!
