So I did my first oil change since buying this truck. Went with Shell Rotella T6 5-40 and motorcraft oil filter. I also changed the fuel filters with motorcraft as well.
Well afterwards I forgot to purge the fuel pump and started the truck. It died, I tired to restart 2 more times and remembered the 5 key turns. (Duh!)
I purged the pump like 10 times to be extra sure, it started right up, no leaks.
leak it for a short drive a noticed a small intermittent tick.
Parked it over night, drove it today about 70 miles in total and pulled a medium sized dump trailer for about 25 of those.
Drove again tonight and it is still ticking while accelerating.
Is this something of major concern or typical of changing to synthetic oil? Or could it be a result of air in the fuel line?
It is not good for HPFP to run dry like that but you probably didn't damage anything. 6.7 is notorious for developing a tick after an oil change (google 6.7 tick after oil change). As far as I know nobody really knows why and it doesn't always happen and not all trucks do it. Ford says it is normal operating characteristic of the engine and I have never heard of it causing any problem.
Edit: Did a little more searching and it seems to possibly be related to oil brand. A lot of the reports on the internet are people using Rotella T6. I use Valvoline PBE 5W40 and have never had the tick.
I had the fresh oil tick when using Motorcraft 15w-40 for at least the first 1,000 miles each change. I switched to Rotella T6 around 50,000 miles and haven't heard the tick in years.
Does it sound like this? If so that is called the typewriter tick and is completely normal after an oil change. Most people complain about this noise when using synthetic oils.
