I have a 1999 F-150 that is having problems with the LED odometer display. It does not always turn on right away at startup and sometimes goes out after it has been on. Sometimes it will come back on, sometimes it won't. It continues to record mileage so I know the thing is recording the mileage somewhere. I'd like to know if anyone else has a had a problem with the LED display flickering on and off, tho properly recording mileage. What should I be looking at for fixing the problem? Is there a way to fix it without having to take it to a dealer? Is this something simple like maybe replacing a bulb or connector? Any and all advice appreciated, can email me privately as well, this is my first attempt at the forums!
Thank You,
Dan in MN (MNHop2@msn.com)
PS if it matters, the truck is 1999 F-150, 4x4, 4.6L V8, Automatic with Off Road pkg.
You will find probably 50 posts about this. Only one fix. Replace the cluster. Someday someone will get the courage to open one up and solder it and report back, but until then I have not found one person who has conquered the 99 odometer blanks out without replacing the cluster, which you can get at the Ford dealer remanufactured for around 250.00. They will have to send in a claim form and Ford will set the odometer to match yours, and ship it to the dealer where you can pick it up or have it installed.
My truck started to do the same thing a while ago. To quote the service advisor "Can't find the problem but the mechanic says if you hit the dash just right, it some times starts working again." My reply "So obviously he DID find the problem!" -go figure. One week later Ford decided to finally order up a new cluster for my truck. I was suppose to get the cluster replaced today, (three weeks after they ordered it) but not sure if I will be able to tell if this fixes the problem as I had to get my truck towed to the dealer last night. Don't know how much damage I did to my truck when a tie rod decided it didn't want to go four wheeling any more. Hard to drive when tires look like this // \\. Unfortunatly I had to. Not too many off road tow trucks around here. Ouch. Good luck with getting a new cluster, but it should solve your problem.
Yes they did. I was hoping for a 4X , but after seeing my truck I guess they thought that a car might be a safer loaner for me. Do you have any idea how fast I have to drive to clear mud holes now?!? Seriously, if anyone is getting their cluster replaced remember to bring both your keys along or they won't be able to program the new cluster. Too bad they forgot to tell me. By the way Racerguy I didn't see you yesterday. Didn't want to work on the truck from hell?- Or didn't want to wait while they pressure blasted the mud off my truck?
It's amazing how fast loaner and rental cars can go through mud eh?
And how well they seem to jump over the mud holes instead of go through them
I didnt see you there on Saturday either. I had the transfer case out of a truck like yours and did a bunch of other stuff to it too so I was probably busy when you were there.
And it's ok that i didnt get to work on your truck......it was too muddy for my liking.
lol
Ok,ok, it wasnt any worse than most bush trucks we work on and after Ricky washed it off it wasn't that bad
Just wait till I get the straight axle and real mud tires. By the way that Focus is missing the clutch pedal and is making some very strange noises. The grinding sound started after I put that strange shifter into P for passing. I noticed that the car started to slow down no matter how much gas I gave it. I then put it in R for race to see if it would help but it seemed to make matters worse. You might want to tell the guys to make sure the cars get check out before they give them out. One last thing, does the feeling that you're dragging your butt on the pavement when driving cars ever go away.
Dont you hate when the clutch pedal goes awol?
And no i dont think the butt dragging feeling goes away.
I worked on a SD F350 today with a lift kid and big tires. Other than the bad wandering problem it had it sure felt nice being up that high again. I miss my old truck with the 38.5's
I have a 2000 f150 XLT and it recently started doing the same thing. Odometer light goes off but will come back on after a couple of minutes. At least it has been coming back on. Seems to me that if ehere are a lot of the same problems with this Ford should do a recall, but I guess they won't. Also seems like if you can hit the dash and get it to come back on there is a loose connection somewhere, which should not require a cluster change.
