The non-synchro, 1 1/2-ton truck 4-speed in my '47 Marmon-Herrington Mercury wagon scrambled itself yesterday...anybody have one in good working order? If not, are parts available for a rebuild? THANKS!
Sorry to see that your wonderful Merc left you on the side of the road. I’m not sure what the differences are between the big truck Warner T9s vs the T9s fitted to smaller models but would bet they are similar if not the same, aside from the rear mounts. Normally these are pretty much bullet proof. I rebuilt mine and got all the pieces from Chuck. Van Pelt is also a rebuild source. Stu
Thanks, Stu.
It ate it a few blocks from my house (worst sound I ever heard!); a heroic AAA guy got it unloaded and pushable into the garage, so at least it's safe. It had a nice 73-year run. First thing I did was email Chuck.

There is a guy greasherjosh13 on the HAMB with a 4 speed non syncro trans. He is in Chino. Don't know if it would work for you. I PM'd him. If he gets back to me with contact info I'll forward it to you in a PM unless you're already a member of the HAMB.
UPDATE: I drained the trans. and the transfer case through a screen; there was zero sign of metallic debris. Then I removed the floor pan and pulled the top off of the trans....it looks perfect inside which, I hope, explains why everyone keeps telling me that "those transmissions are bullet-proof". I now suspect something in the clutch (Centerforce with only about 25K miles on it) let go; again, the noise was horrific. In any case, both gear boxes will be taken out and inspected, which will also reveal any clutch problem.
UPDATE: Some of you may remember my post from back in May, 2020 looking for help for the ancient, damaged 4-speed truck trans. in my '47 Mercury/Marmon-Herrington wagon. Well, after "only" 3 1/2 years, numerous offers of iffy replacements, and attempts by two specialty shops...IT'S FIXED!
I finally took it to Anthony Stoessel, of Coachcraft, Ltd., the very same shop that camperized the wagon in the early 1950s; Anthony is the grandson of the original founder of the shop, which originated in Hollywood. He tried everything, but determined that the trans. (vintage 1938) was too far gone and found one in New York that was removed from a running 1940 truck and stored for over 50 years...this relic was inspected and found to be pristine, with maybe 2,000 miles on it! ...I'm pretty happy.
Back to normal! Camera work (and the purse on the floor) by my wife; botched downshift by me.
