Weird gauge issue

Modifying original post.

okay so I know gauge works because when grounded out it pegs. I know sender works because when moved by hand it reads correct value proportionally. The issue is that it reads correct for the first 30 seconds of driving with engine running, and then drops down to zero and doesn’t go back up unless I unbolt the sender and juggle it around.

ive opened the sender up and all it clean inside
replaced wires today also and none has changed the actions.

sorry for changing this post so many times, I’ve not gotten consistent results with what I’m doing until now. Final post I oromise

Edit: not float, took it out and let it sit in water for an hour and it did not release bubbles or let water in, nor did I ever hear gas inside of it.

It only goes down quicker than it should and gets stuck when trick is in motion. It can sit with the engine off or on and stay where it should be, but once moving it drops.

Anyone? This is frustrating

Found that tapping on both the fuel tank and sending unit will cause it to eventually rise back up to the normal level.

howver it still makes no sense as to why it would plummet when I begin to drive, yet stay correct before driving engine running or not

So you have not stated what you are working on; your public profile states 1966 so I will go with that assumption. The temp and fuel gauge are routed through a small voltage regulator located on the back side of the instrument cluster (on custom cab models - I’ve only had custom cabs, but suspect standard works the same way). Is your temp gauge functioning properly? Make sure you have a clean and secure ground connection from fuel sending unit to rear of cab. Also the wire from the fuel gauge to the tank runs up through the A pillar and back down the B pillar. That wire should be checked to make sure the insulation is intact and it has continuity.

Yes it is a 66 and yes it is the same regulator for both temperature and fuel gauges. The temperature gauge is working correctly.

I ran a new wire in place of the orange wire just to see if maybe it had split within the casing, and that did not change anything. I also cleaned the ground very good to bare metal and it did not change anything either

Due to the tapping sometimes fixing it my money is on a ground/connection issue or the sender. They can fail intermittently.

What other grounds are there aside from the one on the sender?

it’s odd that it only drops once in motion too, don’t y’all think?
