I'm new to posting in this part of the forum, usually hang out over in the 67-72 Side. My 72 has a 7.3idi and my 93 F-Superduty does as well. I had the motor from the 93 apart for months to get the heads rebuilt, the lifters were in an open top box. When I pulled them out I just wiped them off and blew some compressed air at them. I heard later that they should be bled before being reinstalled. Why is this?
I could see a lifter sticking in it's fully extended state and causing a knock. I guess that is the main reason I pump them before installing to make sure it ain't stuck.
I guess obviously I should say when you do pump lifters up you don't want to just slap them in then start the engine right up... wait at least 30 minutes for them to bleed down.
