I'm thinking about swapping out my wheels and tires out from hubcap style to old school torq-thrust style rims.. I want to fill out the wheel well out better and still kinda keep the old school look... I was thinking 17 or 18 inch rims... I would love to see what you guys are using to ensure I avoid clearance issues...
I'll try and add pictures later... Thanks in advance...
How about some old school "Cragers" 17x8 in front and 17x10 in rear. Can't beat that for old school.
Front's are 235 / 45 / ZR17 and rear's are 285 / 40 / ZR17
My wife's truck is FAR from done, but these pictures are from when we test fitted her new wheels and they sound like what you are looking for. They are American Racing VN309's (17x8, 0 offset) with 235/60 17 Coopers.
Being computer challenged I can't post a picture but I went with chrome reverse and baby moons. These, Crager super sports, Torque Thrust and Ansen slotted were the most popular in the 60's. I agree that going over 16" in diameter just doesn't give a vintage look and effect ride quality.
Torque Thrusts like wyrm's but 15 x 7 with Firestone 235/75 x 15s all around. Rides very nicely and handles pretty well with front and rear sway bars and KYB gas shocks. IMG 1115 mini
Rocket Racing 17 X 8's. , 4-1/2 inch backspacing. 235/60's front, 255/60's rear.
Why Rockets? They had the correct size hole centers for Ford hubs instead of one size for everyone Dodge center holes, and they are made in Chattanooga. Rocket Racing Wheels | Free Shipping From Selected Dealers!
I went with the eight spoke Westerns in white, 15X8 cause if five spokes are good, eight are better! Plus I nhad them on my first slick, a 62 swb uni in the 80's. I run 31X10.5X15's at stock ride height and no clearance issues. Previous owner had slathered white Plasti dip on everything above the gym line I'm slowly getting it off and I've got the trim off the bed to help facilitate that. New Custom Cab badges on the doors and I need to fold the fender badges off buff underneath them. Got a smoking deal on these white 8 spoke steel wheels and 31 10 and 1/2 by 15 all terrains Boom, there they are.
Because I have 14" 6p brakes on all 4 corners I had to go with a minimum of a 18" wheel. I went with these the closest to "old school" but in 18" They are very close to the Halibrands of the day along with the Lambo Miura from back in 1966 that I remembered from 1966 comic book days. Friend has a 1967 Miura and wheels are very close. 285/40-18 rear and 245/45-18 front. Same tire combo as I had on My 2008 GT500KR. Drive and handling is incredible for Twin I beam.
