Severed camera/tpms cable

I was on a long camping trip and those little f....’n chipmunks chewed almost completely through the auxiliary camera/tpms cable on the trailer.
The camera cable portion is a coax type of cable with two standard insulated wires continuously twisted and a multi thread bare wire all wrapped in a foil wrapper that’s black on the ouside. I spliced the three wires with crimping connectors and wrapped them with some aluminized tape but the camera doesn’t work as I thought. Does anyone have ant ideas on how to splice this non standard coax?
thankyou

Interesting. I have the camera setup on my 2020. There is no coax cable in my wire harness.

Doesn’t sound like a coax cable, sounds like a shielded pair cable. Don’t see any reason why what you did wouldn’t work. The aluminum foil with the bare wire embedded in it is an electromagnetic shield, you do need to make sure that you have good connectivity on the foil and bare “drain” wire. Might be better to solder the connections, so there is no resistance, pretty low voltage system.

Soldering aluminum is no mean feat.

I prepped everything to solder all of the chewed wires. I also cut the foil wrapping with an exacto knife so I could rewrap the 3 wires with the original shielding. I should’ve soldered in the first place and I knew better. A hack job like I did never works! I will report back with the results.
thanks for the input!

Ok, I did an immaculate job soldering the wires back together and the camera still does not work. I get subtle lines horizontally across the screen. The original shielding would not completely cover the soldered and shrink wrapped wires so I use some tin foil this time. Can this cable be that sensitive? The only other thing that’s a little different is the two wires that were not chewed through are now doubled over rather than cutting them to the new length do the repaired wires. These two wire are twisted together like two of the wires in the shielding.
i checked every inch of the cable and there is no other damage.
Does anyone have any other ideas before I spend the big bucks replacing the cable. That is, if I can even purchase just the cable.
Thanks again.

Cable should not be that sensitive.

have you looked the full length of the cable to make sure there are no other bite marks? Just one bite could sever one of the wires but only leave a small puncture.

I'm not sure how much you had to replace, and I'd actually be surprised if the lack of twisted pair for a small portion would make a difference in your case, but just for the record: technically, you have a "shielded twisted pair cable". The twisting of the two internal conductors is done to preserve signal integrity.

I've never tried to splice coax. I've always just cut it, put a female connector on both ends and then use a barrel connector between those two.
