2016 6.2L Trans problem (STEALERSHIP!)

Hope everyone is well and staying safe.

Since new the truck has an odd chatter (metal to metal squeak) in park or drive at idle and operating temp. The sound is coming from underneath around the engine and trans.

A month ago I goosed it a liitle into traffic. Rev'd to 3k RPM, the tranny caught and lurched hard. As if I rev'd it in neutral then dropped it in drive. This only happened once since new.

Since then, the trans is somewhat spongy upon acceleration. Not bad though. Its drivable and no codes

The stealership (Ford) has always blown me off about the noise and say "they can't duplicate the problem". God I hate that... So finally one day I dropped by and had a mechanic come out and look at it. He FINALLY heard it. I mention the trans issue too.

Just got a call today. Needs a "Front Pump", fuild, filter and a new torque converter. I asked for more clarification on the pump he didn't really know.

THE KICKER!!!

He told me not to drive it at all and leave it with them till Friday. I asked why and he said no fluid being pumped and the chatter noise is part of it! I said the chatter has been like that since new and how much damage in 3 years no fluid pumping!!! I suggested a new trans. He said no...

Does the diagnosis match the symptoms? Since its been like this since new, should I push for a new trans?

Specs:

2016 F-250 6.2L

4WD Ext cab

34k miles

Bought new 3.5 years ago.

100% stock

Mostly driven on highway as daily commuter truck with no pay load or trailer.

Still under powertrain warranty.

THOUGHTS?

Many thanks!

If there was no fluid being pumped no clutches would engage and the trans would never have engaged in any gear. It's impossible for there to be no pumping and the truck being able to drive.

Hey Mark. In all due respect, you sound like your contradicting yourself.

If no fluid pumping, clutches and gear would not engage. Then you say if not pumping it would still drive? Correct me if I'm missing something.

My main concern is I have 1.5 years left on the power train warranty. If its been failing for the for the last 3 years with little to no fluid pumping what else has premature wear on it.

What I was trying to say is that if the pump isn't pumping you would not be able to drive the truck. Without the pump pumping the trans has park and a whole lot of neutrals.

Interesting....I don't have Mark's expertise but the dealership's plan seems reasonable, provided the symptoms vanish and it drives well afterward of course.

Really I'm just posting to ask you follow up once repairs are completed and if any problems arise in the future!

Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

I've had issues with this dealer before and this truck. That's why I'm concerned. Fixing things they didn't need to fix, etc. Saying something isn't broken when it was. I've had to show them how to fix things. I personally had to fix their mistakes too.. There are many instances but one in particular was outside water leaking into the dashboard when brand new. Scratched the truck up, ruined the headliner and gouged the dash, 3 windshields, white over spray all over the truck, took 3 days at a body shop for buff out etc etc. Unfortunately everywhere else you go they tell you to go with the original dealer you bought it.

So thats my reason for worry. I just want it fixed right the first time so I don't have to deal with issues down the road or have the dealer just give me a line of BS.

I would advise you to seek out a dealer that has a certified diesel mechanic on staff.

he has the 6.2l

You are correct though in terms of him looking for a dealer with a specific truck section. Not all dealers have them; luckily my local dealer does and they do very good work

OP - you do not have to use your original dealer; any Ford dealer should do it.

Yeah I'd want a dealer with a strong transmission guy, regardless of engine combustion type. That said, I dunno how you locate such a dealer other than word of mouth

Thanks bud.

They are a certified large truck dealer. In fact when I demanded a more expirenced mechanic this time to diagnose the issue, he said they put a truck tech on it this time. He said the last 3 times I brought it in for the chatter complaint a regular tech and an oil change tech worked on it because they where to busy. He said they also don't put truck techs making $40+/hr on simple jobs because they don't want to pay it. Imagine that even after its been there for the same issue over and over.

He also said they have students from local schools doing some of the work. When the service center is slammed with work, they put those students on some of the larger jobs for extra man power. Which is fine you have to start somewhere but in my eyes leave the complicated stuff for the expirenced techs and have the students watch. One of those students messed up my steering column back in October. I needed my turn signal fixed. Well in the process he broke the power petal button. Had to bring it back to fix it. It got fixed but then the plastic column wouldn't close because he broke the clip tabs. I said screw it, had them order the part and I fixed it my self.

Another time I had to get my factory steps replaced under warranty for corrosion. I literally had to go back 3 times to the dealer to take pictures of it. Each time the service writer lost the pics or couldn't upload them then they got a new system and no one knew how to use it... So I once again said screw it and took my own pics and sent it to the service manager. It took them 2 months to replace them between all the back and forth and Fords approval.

ANOTHER TIME, my over head console broke and wouldn't shut. They said it can't be fix because they need to remove the entire head liner. (Mind you its the 2nd headliner in the truck because of the windshield leak. They folded the headliner in half to inspect the clearance lights leaving a giant crease in the headliner.) I said no kidding, walk with me. I unclipped in front of him and handed it to him. Said order it... he did.

Here's ANOTHER! My clearance lights would fill with water (condensation) after that windshield leak debacle. They covered the new lights no problem. They called me and said the part is in but if I want to wait until my next oil change (kill two birds with one stone) i can get it done them. Sure no prob... When I got the oil change a month later (right on time) they said sorry the clearance light warranty work order got closed and the part sent back. I told them I was told to wait! So then they call Ford to have it covered again. Now Ford said NOPE SOL.... WTF!!! So once again I ordered the parts and fixed it myself...

So the reason why I go to this dealer is because believe it or not the next two closest to me are even worse! Not to mention I have a 6 month old at home and to get rides back and forth with no truck is a real PITA.

I worked at a few Ford dealers, and dealt with warranty parts returns.
If I were you ( OP ) I would call the regional director for Ford.

Thanks bud. Wish I knew that. I will definitely do that if the tranny becomes an issue.

I called the Ford warranty issue hotline directly. Zero help...

Listen to this. I know its long but its good...
Feels good to vent....

You guys should see the job they did on the windshield leak repair when it was brand new.
The first repair attempt they gooped adhesive around the windshield and creased the headliner looking for the leak. Brought it back they put in a new headliner in it after a lot of BS.... 2 weeks later still leaking and worse. 2nd attempt I said stop screwing around its brand new, put a new windshield in! Ford said no windshield and put more adhesive in. The truck was under a "rain machine" for 8 hours straight to find the leak again. Well in the process, it was parked next to the body shop. My bright red truck got white over spray all over it.... To fix the 2nd leak the PLASTERED black adhesive all around the windshield. More on this later... So when I picked up the truck I demanded for it to be buffed. They sent it to a body shop. It took THREE days to buff out the entire truck!

6 months later I had a rock hit... AH WHAT THE F@#$.... Called the insurance and company glass company comes out. They started taking the molding off and said No F'# way are we touching this... 2 glass companies later I had had to bring BACK to the dealer! I made sure I was there for the repair. I hated to do this but baby sat them... Trust me, I'm a tradesman myself and hate someone watching over my shoulder but what the F man... Well they smashed the windshield getting it out... Glass all down my defroster and everywhere.... Truck had under 5,000 miles on it... So to get the rest of the glass out they used a Sawzall with spatchalor on it. Well they had such a hard time getting the glass and glue out the kid dropped the sawzall on my dash still reciprocating... Gouges all over my dash!!! I went full hulk and turned green...

So now I get my dash repaired. The a@# hole who painted the dash made it full gloss with dust all in the paint!!! Had to have a 2nd paint job by another company... He did a good job but now I have a painted dashboard and can't put interior shine products on it... Too boot the guy put a 6inch long scratch down to bare metal on the drivers door! Back to the body shop for paint!!!

You see, the truck is cursed and everyone who touches it....

Oh almost forgot...!
After the rock hit windshield repair, I used the defroster on my way to work. Well I got a good ole glass shard stuck in my eye and a trip to the ER.... I think its time to call an Exorcist for this truck.................
