1997 7.3 no start/hard start issues
Current issue after repairs, it's VERY hard starting if it does at all. After a few minutes of cranking, I finally got white smoke, but would never hit. It finally started, but had to hold the accelerator so it would not die. I left off, and it died. After some more cranking it started, but only ran at about 500rpm and would not respond to throttle. After a few minutes of running the RPMs dropped off and it quit. Could not get it restarted. Now when trying to start I'd get a knock about every engine revolution. What's strange is the previous week I replaced the fuel pump and after lots of extended cranking, it fired up and it ran pretty good, had power and boost with a short drive, shut if off and restarted it multiple times with no issues. Now it's misbehaving. What's the next step? Below is what I've done to the engine so far and posted elsewhere:
Running out of options on getting this damn thing to start and run. Friend's farm truck, trying to help him out. Ran good for years until this.
Previous symptoms were hard starting, low power, nonresponsive to throttle input (idles only) and then dies. This happened to me on a road test.
After some repairs today, it started after an extended cranking session, but only ran for about 30 seconds and was rough and would not respond to throttle. Eventually died as if for lack of fuel. Would not restart, did not see any white smoke although I did see some earlier when attempting to start. Here's what's been done in the last few months:
Replaced IPR
Replaced ICP
Replaced CPS
Replaced fuel pump since a shop that worked on it before claimed it was bad.
Rebuilt fuel bowl and pressure regulator as it was dirty and leaking.
Batteries are good and at full power.
Oil is clean and full
Fuel in bowl is clear and not contaminated with oil.
No blown fuses
Tach works
Glow plug relay comes on
Starter is turning over engine fast enough.
Fuel tank has enough fuel in it to test with.
HPOP reservoir is full of oil.
Am getting fuel pressure at the test fitting on the regulator.
Ran injector buzz test and they all responded strongly but some had different tones. I think a few were replaced long ago.
Is it a bad HPOP at this point? I cannot think of anything else except maybe for the IDM which I can't test or borrow another one or buy at this time.
Local Diesel shop quoted $1500 for 'injector pump' I assume they really mean the HPOP I think.
Any ideas? I am about ready to give up.
You have done a lot of work. Maybe this will help. Injector pump, tell him its not a VW diesel, lol.
