Steering column brief vibrations...is it "normal" ?
Greetings to all.,
I purchased a new 2020 Super Duty and I am not very familiar with some of the technical advancement of new pickup trucks.
I picked up my new truck late Feb and since the quarantine, I have not have a chance to take a long ride. All my driving has been very few miles near by me. I have less than 300 miles so far.
Here is the question. When driving around town, occasionally I feel and hear a vibration. Sort of minor rumble coming from the steering wheel's shaft. I believe this truck has electronic assistance steering. Is it the Electronic Device that "assist the steering" what I hear and feel? It last for a second or two. Happens sporadically but at least once or twice when I run my short errands.
I know, eventually, some minor things are going to pop up by the time I'll take the truck for service. I would like to understand what's happening and the source of the vibration, if any of you guys could advice me.
More than likely you have lane keeping assist active, at the low alert setting. It uses a camera to track the white lines on the road, and if you drift over to them without using the turn signal it will vibrate the steering wheel to let you know you are drifting in your lane.
you can set the alert level to make it more pronounced, and turn it on or off with the button above the central display, I don’t have a picture to put here, but you could look online.
Another for lane keeping. It should feel like three short vibrations and sounds like your phone vibrating on a soft surface. Besides when it is keeping you in your lane, it will go off if you change lanes without a signal and mine will occasionally go off if I merge without signaling. I can only think of one time in my 2500 miles of driving so far that it went off and I had no idea why.
You shouldn't be feeling any feedback from the steering otherwise except what is directly caused by the road.
morleyz,
I think your description is accurate. I do not feel it on the steering wheel at all. The three vibrations you mentioned, I will have to verified. Sounds really precise. Another description would be a fast oscillation....maybe.
Well well well,
You guys gave me enough to look for and answer my own question in the Manual.
It says, "When you switch the system on and detects unintentionally drift out of your lane, the system notifies you through the steering system and information display"
Thanks a lot to you all.
If I'm not mistaken, there is a button above the sync screen to disable it and I believe there is also a setting on the screen between the speedo and tach.
Yes, there is one and I found the button. I turned it off.
Yeah, only 300 miles due to the quarantine which I have followed to the T since I am among the "Golden Age" crowd and weakest people if we have caught Covid-19.
