Mine has the same issue, mine is a manual though so I just drive it. I was thinking I probably melted a fusible link when I accidentally hooked up 2 batteries(24V) trying to jump it before I had new batteries/battery cables. Smart I know. I've looked at a wiring diagram to look for the fusible links, but I only found 1 and it looked ok? Let me know what you find out!

I have a manual too and drive by ear not tach, just one of those things that has annoyed me for years
IF you have Standard Tranny A9 goes to the Tach Sensor on the IP gear housing and the Ground wire for the sensor, it is still behind the Left Cowl Panel.
My Last post gives what the resistance specs should be... but Heat destroys Magnetism so a sender that tests Good may in fact be putting out low voltage due to loss of magnetism on the center Pole Piece.... and of course fuzz on it acts like a Keeper on a Horse shoe magnet.

I’ll check that out. Thanks. Tach sender is on the IP?
yeah a new sensor costs 25 to 30 bux ... pretty expensive.... when that might not be the issue....
Did you check it;s value... and clean it ?
what was the AC voltage that it was putting out at Idle ?
I know most folks just want to toss money at a problem without knowing the real cause.
Insulation is coming off both wires all the way into the the sensor and there is no way to replace them. I'll pony up for the sensor since those wires are in bad shape. Then I can continue on to looking for ground problems.
