I bought a jeep last year that was previously modified with "ford axles".
I know the front axle is a Dana 60 king pin high pinion....Ithink 78 to 79 camper special f250.
transmission is a np435 4 speed manual.
transfer case is a ford np205.
rear axle is a standard dana 70.
read through forums and seen that camper special f350s had dana 70 rear axles...but were 2x4.
were there any years that match all the axles, transmission and transfer case I listed?
I appreciate any help I get in this. I have been researching for months with what ever casting numbers, etc that I can find. rear axle is really my last unknown. It makes sense that all of it came off the same donor vehicle. my original thought was the D70 rear came off a dodge....which didnt make sense to me with everything else being from a ford.
Makes sense to me either way. Lots of people swapped lots of different combinations in. I've heard that some F350 4wd Fords had a 70, but I've never seen one, or know anyone that has.
The Dodge, GM and Ford axles all used the same 8 on 6.5 bolt pattern wheels, so no worries about compatibility between front and rear there. Same wheels then.
Did you find the BOM number off the D70? With that you could probably find what it originally was installed on.
Fords had them too of course, so it could be out of a 2wd Ford truck and the front axle was simply out of a different donor. Those king-pin 60's were practically a commodity traded all over for years. Could have easily been from a different source.
In '79 F350's at least, I had the lightest duty with an 8550 GVWR and had a basic Dana 60 in the rear. Friend had a much higher GVWR well into the 9,000's and still had a 60.
Good luck. Maybe one of the Dana gurus can shed light if you have the BOM.
I looked for the BOM and have not found yet on either. no tags on either and they had been painted....and I havent taken paint off yet to look. there have been plenty of other indicators to what they are. I am just trying to find out if there was a vehicle that had all 4 of them under ot at same time from factory.
the owners manual spec and the service manual show no 70 in a 4x4 in78-79. Now, with the things that go on, well, it could be a wrecked truck that was rebuilt and an axle was found available from a similar year ford that got swapped in this would mean it may have been living contently in the same chassy for several years.
