I have a 79 f250 and I am curious how I can tell what my rear transfer case is. is it a Dana 60 or 44 or what? I am new at this stuff so any help is appreciated
Well, a truck generally only has 1 t-case, and it's generally in the middle of the truck. The D60 & D44 are "axles". If you need to know about the t-case, look here. For axles, look here or here.
Thanks, I meant axle. As I said I am new to this. ONe of your links for axles did not work. So judging by the one link I can measure the size and shape and I should be able to tell whether it is Dana 44 or Dana 60?
as I mentioned it is a 79 f250 and I am quite sure it has not been changed.
Yes, you should be able to ID it just by looking at the shape of the rear cover. I doubt an F-250 would have a D44, but if it DOES have a Dana axle, and you can find the bill of materials number, you can look it up here.
The easy way to tell is by looking on the diff just below and to the right (or left, cant remember) of the differential cover. On the little triangular shaped webbing. Dana 60 will have a "60" cast there, a Dana 44 would have a "44", etc.
Not that's it's not possible, but I've never heard of an F-250 having a Dana 44 out back. Ocassionally you hear of a guy who claims to have a factory D44 rear in his F-150 or F-100, but I'm even skeptical about that. I'm not saying that it's not possible though.
