Replacement tailgate with factory sprayed in bedliner

So the wife calls... "I had a wreck"... uh oh. I ask if everything is okay... she says she was in the yard (I'm thinking how did you wreck in the yard)...

Says she put the lawnmower on the trailer and it rolled and the trailer came off the ball and hit the tailgate... put a hole in it.

No big deal I did something stupid like that on my old truck, but just dented it... had it fixed no problem... but this one will have to be replaced.. took the R out of Super Duty she said..

What do they do about the factory bed liner coating on the replacement? I hope it can match the rest of the bed... that would stink if it didn't... anyone have any experience with an issue like this..

2019 Ruby Red Platinum 350 SRW.

The way the factory spray in bed liner is applied is different than the aftermarket which is the same way the dealer would apply it if they offer this service.

Also, the product itself is different.

With that being said, the new coating will be close but it will not be a 100% match.

The average person won’t notice a difference but since it’s your truck, you will notice the difference.

The factory spray in liner is done in the same way that Line-X is, sprayed in by a person. The color and texture might vary slightly because of a difference in product used, equipment used or even just a different person doing it. But I wouldn't expect the difference to be an issue, after all its a dull, black textured surface, not like paint matching a shiny metallic fender.

and you can be sure the line-x will be put on better, properly sanded and sprayed. oem liner install they do not sand the bed, you can peel it up if you like....

Just a hair over $3,000 to replace and that's using the existing step and camera...
This quote came from the body shop at the dealer... the lady giving my wife a quote told me to call the dealership that I bought the truck from and ask them who they used to put the bed liner in... she said Ford doesn't do that from the factory... ugh...

That is true, but if its factory ordered with the spray in option, or if it has the Sport package, it is done prior to being shipped to the dealer. I would just go to Line-X, they can tell you how close or not the match will be. Why are you so worried about a slight difference?

I'm not super concerned, it was just a thought as I was trying to figure out getting it fixed.

My truck was Line-X'd as part of the purchase agreement. 2 weeks after taking delivery an incompetent forklift driver put his forks into the edge of my lowered tailgate. Local dealer had a white takeoff that they prepped and painted Ruby Red (matched perfect) and I used my guts. This takeoff had the factory liner on it. The factory liner has less coverage around the edges versus Line-X but color/texture wise it's a dead match to my Line-X. If I took the Line-X'd access cover off my old gate and put it on the new one with the factory spray in liner, you couldn't tell. So don't sweat it.

From the Ford website, build and price.

Bedliner – Tough Bed® Spray-in
$595 S4
RemoveTough Bed® is a factory-installed spray-in bedliner using a precision high-pressure automated sprayer, not a hand sprayer, to help ensure a smooth, even and durable coat. Tough Bed provides a watertight seal and helps resist rust. This option includes a tailgate guard, black bed tie-down hooks and bed attachment bolts.

I was just going to say the same. I had a truck with linex prior to this one with factory spray in liner. The texture is identical to linex.

Wouldn't be the first time they included false info on their site. The fact is a 3rd party does the spray in. There used to be a short Ford video showing the masking involved and the guy spraying it on. I still don't know why they don't spray it on before the bed is installed.....oh wait, its because they send it out to be sprayed after assembly. The so called black bed bolts and tie downs are covered in black spray liner too.

Maybe they updated and do it automated now? One of the reasons I ordered it is because they made it sound superior with the automated sprayer. lol It will be nice to have it all done when it arrives at the dealership, although my salesman at the dealership said they do it also, and theirs is thicker.

I just reread the Ford quote. Pretty firm, that it is automated. Says, automated and then doubles down and says, not a hand sprayer. Who knows.

True, it could have since gone automated. I tried to find the video but was unsuccessful.

The topic has come up in the past because the trucks with the spray liner option go off to another location prior to shipment. The facility name that does, or was doing it, was named in some past thread.
