Question Front axle loose?

I just bought a..well i dont know what year it is really. Its got a 79 front w/a360 and 4wheel drums on a 4x4?! But anyhow when i turn the steering wheel the axle will move first then the tires will turn! When im drivin down the road its like drivin on ice! The only modifications i can see is a single shock sterring stablizer and a 6inch lift. Any help would be good! Thanx guys

I had something similar happen to my 78 F250 4x4. I didnt really give it much thought because i figured it was just the road or something but it began to get pretty scarey. When i finally crawled under it I had somebody else turn the steering wheel. To my surprise the axle was sliding back and forth on the leaf springs before the tires would turn. I just centered up the axle on the leaf springs and then tightened up the U-bolts, which were very very loose, extremely tight. Everything hass been fine since then and it has been over a year.

If the truck is an F150 I would suspect track arm bushings. If it is a F250 then I would agree with CAlex and look at the U-Bolts.
