Just bought a Lund visor today, and want to match the color on my 96 F-150. the paint code on the data plate is XC, which also matches the data sheet for the canopy, which was color matched to the truck. Problem is, when I try to find this code for Duplicolor, I get zilch. I found a small touch-up tube called Light Denim Blue which looks like an exact match on the few small parts I tested it on, but it's a completely different code, K1.
Does anybody have a source other than Duplicolor for good paint matching? Do Ford dealerships stock such items, or would it be a special order?
The other color you found is probably the same color just not metallic. Most touch-up and oem matching paints don't offer metallic or tinted paints. (I think,, I can't find Laser Red Tinted E9 touchup anywhere). Go check out your local body shop, they should be able to mix any color you want.
Hi guys, the reason you are having a difficult time finding your paint is that most of the new colors are pearl colors which are sprayed on in stages (ie)laser red three stages base, pearl, and clear they can't put that in a spray can so they just don't make it you have to go to a local body shop or paint supply house and get the paint and if it is right it will be in a couple of different cans. My paint code didn't show up on any of the quick reference cards, and I didn't want to waste a great deal of time getting the visor installed. I went to a local paint store that specializes in auto paint. they looked at my code, and hit their extensive paint reference book, and came up with.....
Portofino Blue Metalic by Centari. Good stuff. Should be for almost $19.00 per pint.
I have two compressors, but no painting equipment, so they hooked me up with a Preval spray gun, which consists of a glass bottle with graduated markings on the glass, and a pressure can that mounts on top of the unit. It only cost $7.95 for the setup, and another $4.95 for an extra can of propellant. The rep said it gives superior results to a spray can, and works well for a small project like this.
Here's the cool part. This is a base coat/clear coat like John said in the previous post. The cool part is they sold me a can of hardner to add to the paint after it's thinned, and it makes the paint resistant to chemicals, while providing a high gloss finish.... No clear coat required! So it won't be a long involved process to get the visor painted, and the paint should be a better match than a can of Duplicolor off the shelf (not that Duplicolor is crap, they make some good paint).
Total cost for paint, thinner, additive, sprayer, and extra propellant was $49.00 Keeping in mind that I'll have the sprayer, some thinner, and a bit of color-matched paint for touch-ups and dress-ups, that's not too bad. A sight more than a few cans of spray paint, but a lot higher quality.
Hope this helps you. I'd recommend a dedicated paint shop any time after the excellent assistance I got from those guys today. Especially if you have to paint a highly visible part of your truck.
Man! Only 3 days & I'm totally blown away by this truck... Simply love it! The only down side is the gas mileage, but Hey! Ya gotta pay to play!
Oldsarge, just don't put the paint from the preval sprayer back in the can after you mix the hardner, even a drop of hardner will set up that whole pint it will just take awhile but before you need to do touch up it will be set up!!!!
John
Have appointments all day tomorrow, but I plan to do the initial fit-up tomorrow evening, and do the paint on Saturday morning. I'll let the visor sit overnight, and do the final mounting on Sunday afternoon. I'm real excited about getting it together... Not too many plans after this other than bigger tires, just plan to drive it & enjoy it before I have to go back to work in a week!
