New harmonic balancer throwing up check engine light
Hello.
I have a 1997 F250 Heavy Duty truck but it is an OBS.
My old harmonic balancer was bad and when I changed it I noticed a check engine light on.
I also noticed that my old balancer had this sort of 4-pronged flange attached to it and I'm 100% sure that is what's causing my check engine light.
The thing I do not get is the new balancer I bought fits but I am thinking I didn't press it in all the way. The only difference between my new and old balancers is the 4 prong flange shown below. Is there a different harmonic balancer that I have to buy or is there a way I can take that flange off and put it only new one.
Below is my old balancer:
CA emissions = that four prong star is needed for the crank position sensor / misfire monitor (sensor is attached to your timing cover) on EEC-V / OBD2 equipped engines.
I had the same issue on my 1996 f150 with 5.8L. Nothing to worry about in terms of driveability but that code will remain active until remedied. No idea where to find a correct replacement part, unfortunately.

My buddy just did a SEFI EEC-V swap to his '95 5.8 F250 4x4 using a '96 Bronco engine/front body harness, along with the Bronco computer. Ran in to the same issue. He had an add-on 'tone ring' made at a local machine shop to bolt to the Federal emissions damper so the misfire monitor is happy... It CAN be done!
I just went through this on my 96 F-150 with a 5.8. Press the star wheel off of the old balancer and press it on the new balancer. Only inconvenience is that you will have to remove the new balancer first. I like to have drove myself crazy with that random misfire code until I figured it out.
OR - there's a place my buddy told me about that will rebuild your balancer - remove the outer ring, re-vulcanize new rubber, re-balance for ~$110 WITH the un-obtainium star in the proper place to make misfire monitor happy, too!
