Hi everyone. I have a 2012 6.7 160k miles with a concerning rust problem. The frame has minimal rust and chasis seems good. There is thin sheet metal that seems to just be rusting bad and disintegrating. Anyone have suggestions and if this is a serious concern. The truck had a good undercoating job done years ago before the rust problem. I was thinking of knocking the loose stuff off and por15. Thanks!
I live in the rust belt and have battled rust for years. If you see rust, scrape it off as much as possible, then apply a rust inhibiting paint like POR-15. You will only be able to get at the rust that is out in the open. There is *much* more in hidden areas. Bed rails seem to rust first.
Also, spray the heck out of every area under the truck with Fluid Film or an equivalent oil. I would not use any type of undercoating. Rubberized undercoating just covers the metal and can allow moisture to get trapped between the coating and the metal of your truck. Rust will follow and you will not notice it until it has progressed far. My truck has had the bed off, frame rails replaced, sandblasted, [painted, cussed at and oil treated. Currently there is no visible rust, but I am 100% sure that if I skip an annual oil treatment, rust will return.
Lesson learned. Do not put off rust treatment or repairs. Once rust starts it progresses rapidly.
Lou said it right, but the real answer is to move. These northern states have no respect for personal property and dump the salt and other crap on the roads knowing they will get more tax money from repeated sales of vehicles they destroyed.
