OBD2 cybersecurity !

Hi,
Just read about this in motorage -- an online service oriented mag. They were talking about a Jeep and some of the things that you had to do to allow some more advanced scan tool functions.

This apparently traced back to what some white hat (good guy) hackers did a few years ago. They were able to use the obd2 to cause a Jeep to honk its horn and other stuff. They eventually got it hooked up so that they could access it remotely.

Mopar took this to heart and added some security features. The Feds also got into it and passed a cybersecurity act in 2017.

That's all fine except that it adds one more layer to anybody trying to work on cars. Yes the new bidirectional OBD2 functions can apparently be hacked. BUT you have to hook into the OBD2 to do it. There are all kinds of ways to sabotage a car if you break into it, but this is computer stuff so everybody gets excited.

Bleep,

hj
