On my 1955 ford f100 the fuel gauge reads full when it gets power. when battery is disconnected it goes to empty. I took out the sender and moved the float manually and gauge reads full. My question is should I get a new sender or get sender and gauge package from mid fifty? Any. opinions? I am leaning towards just getting a new sender.
Thanks
Jerry

Before anything I would disconnect the sender wire off the fuel gauge. turn key on the
needle should point to empty if not its the gauge. Most likely the sender wire maybe frayed and is grounding out. Anytime you ground the sending wire it will point to full.

When you removed the sender and moved the float manually did the gauge level change accordingly, or just read full ? Your gauge seems to be working, though it's not doing so correctly. When you power it up and when you disconnect the power the gauge is moving so that's a good sign. As stated above its most likely a bad sender wire or the sender is faulty.

I think I just answered my question this morning. I went to start my truck and the gas gauge stayed on empty. I checked the connector and ground. Also the gauge never moved from full when I removed the sender and moved it manually. Oh well look like I have to call mid fifty. Its ok almost 95 percent of my truck works or is complete. so I can't be that mad.

Thanks
Jerry
