I have an aftermarket fuel gauge that is not working (or so I think) if I ground out the gauge and it pegs full does that mean the gauge is good? and the fault lies with the sending unit?
It means the gauge is working, yes. Agree with meangreen92 if it's the 70/10 resistance type one.
Your float could be the old brass/copper type - they're known for developing pinholes around the mounting surface and reading low to empty. Some rustification of sorts there - in the middle where it was soldered together and hooks around the sender's arm.
