Wifey finally hit 30K on her '01 Expy. Time to change all sorts of fluids. We've got the 5.4L on a 2wd chassis.
First, the tranny. How many quarts including draining the torque converter? I'm a huge synthetic fan (I won't argue either way but I sleep better with synthetic), and I need to know if Mobile 1 ATF is safe for the tranny?
Next, fuel filter. I have the fuel line disconnect tool, but I don't see where to relieve the pressure. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Is there any special approach to priming it afterwards, or can I just turn it over until it lights up?
The tranny capacity should be in your manual. Are you just planning on draining and refilling?
May I suggest a complete flush? You can still use Synthetic. (I sleep better with it too.) Have a local shop do it or check out the technical article section for a method for swapping fluid in the 4R100. Which I think is a cousin to your tranny.
_______
Fuel filter...
On my V10 (a younger cousin of your 5.4L) was a shrader valve on the chromed fuel rail. You can use that.
All I did was pull the fuel pump fuse (see manual) and let the truck die that way. After I installed a new filter I just cranked it till it started. (Of course, I put the fuse back in first...)
Your tranny/TC holds around 14 quarts. To find out if it is compatible, you should head to their website and do some research...I'd bet it is.
As for relieving pressure in your line, it's probably not a bad idea, but when I did mine, I just popped the connectors off the filter and didn't experience any problems. It wouldn't hurt to remove the gas cap before proceeding.
There seems to be a whole lot of confusion if Mobile 1 ATF is compatible with Mercon V. I can't imagine why there is so much confusion on this subject, but I'll bet there is confusion for no reason, my guess is that it just works.
One more service question. The rear diff... is there a drain plug on the bottom or do I need to pop the diff cover off? How many quarts does it hold? Any additives needed?
I have always used Mobil 1 synthetic transmission fluid in the past, but I used Motorcraft Mercon V (I believe it's a synthetic blend) in my 2001 F150 with 4R70W trans. If you have that transmission, which does require Mercon V, I would strongly suggest that you DO NOT use the Mobil 1.
I talked to Mobil and Ford tech support before I did mine. Mobil 1 specifically DOES NOT meet the Mercon V requirements (at least it did not at that time). It's not about quality, but about frictional characteristics.
Next time I do it, I will probably get AAmco Mercon V on sale. It's a synthetic blend made by Exxon Mobil.
Also, it's your decision, but unless you have a lot of extra time and money, you really do not need to change the differential fluid. If yours is like mine (8.8 LS), it requires full synthetic in (I think) 85W140 weight, which is uncommon, plus a specific additive in specific quantity.
Wow, that's good to know on all fronts. This Ford sure is a lot different than my Chevy (changed to Mobile 1 for everything with no problems, had to change the diff fluid @500 miles, etc). In any case, I appreciate the info.
Yeah, I found that, too. Incidentally, another difference is that your tranny probably has a torque converter drain plug, which will allow you to easily change most all of the fluid without paying for a flush. If so, you will find a rubber plug on the bottom of the torque converter housing. Remove it and bump the engine until a pipe plug comes into view. The shop manual says to use a new plug, but everybody, including the dealerships, seems to just re-use it.
PS: I'm not clear that you have the 4R70W trans like me. If you have the 4R100, some things change!
Greg- Make sure you get the right fluid (Mercon or Mercon V - they are NOT interchangeable). Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is Mercon only. Ford hasn't really given much information out concerning alternatives to Motorcraft Mercon V, but I would think your offerings by Redline/Royal Purple would be sufficient. FWIW, I've got Mobil 1 ATF in my tranny and I like it a lot - I refilled with the synth after installing my shift kit, and transmission is smooth, quiet, and shifts real solid. Good stuff.
Originally posted by gassedracing I checked last night and the dipstick handle says Mercon so I am safe with Mobile 1. Thanks for all the input.
Then you've got the 4R100 which is behind most 5.4L engines.
To answer your question about rear differential, it takes 75W-140 and requires an additive if you have the limited slip version. Look inside your driver's door and see if the axle code is a "1" or an "H." The "H" versions are limited slip.
