I’ll look at there options. I did find a local shop that has a pretty good reputation. They said they would rebuild mine for $2200 - $2600 depending on what they find when they get in it. That also includes removal, installation, and a billet torque converter I think they said something about dual piston. Not really sure what that means. Does this sound like a decent price?
Also Mark, I remember reading somewhere what fluid you recommended but I can’t find it now. The transmission shop said they would put synthetic fluid in it if that’s my choice. So my question is what was your recommendation for fluid?
After deep consideration, I’ve decided to just take it to the local shop. With the help on this forum, I’m confident a rebuild/replacement was necessary. I’m also fairly confident I could have done it myself but with my home improvement project mid swing, time was just not there to make it happen.
That video is awesome and I will probably use it on my next truck that needs tranny work. I have 4 power strokes, so it’s just a matter of time before the next one needs some love.
Thank you to everyone who helped me with this. I’ll let you know the outcome from the shop.
I will also request the Mobile 1 fluid as you suggested Mark.
Here’s an update. I took it to the shop. I cleared the codes so I could drive it there and not be in limp mode the whole way since it’s a two hour drive. The code never came back during the drive there. The shop kept it for two days and called me saying they can’t find anything wrong with it. They don’t want to tear into a transmission that they feel is working fine. They mentioned the possibility of an intermittent electrical problem causing the code but without being there to witness what’s going on when the code comes up, they’d just be guessing. So they gave me my truck back at no cost and said drive it until we get a hard failure. I’m glad the shop was honest and didn’t charge me but I’m still stuck with no answer as to what’s going on. Instead of driving four hours round trip and the code potentially coming back, I asked a friend of mine Who lives close to the shop to pick up the truck and drive it until the code comes back. That way he can take it straight to them when it does come back. Well it’s been a couple days and he said it’s still driving fine with no code. What is going on. This truck is driving me crazy. Anyone got any recommendations or suggestions? I guess if the code doesn’t come back, then I’m good.
Problems that fix themselves are never good. You'll drive it for some amount of time and then start trusting it and then it'll fail on you at the most inopportune time. I would limit it to short trips for a while.
Is your truck a 2 or 4wd? Make sure to have your buddy drive the truck around for a good hour or so. My last trans, I milked it all the way to the point where the clutches wore out so that when cold and cool, it would shift and go but then after warmed up, she lost her gears.
I drove it two hours on interstate. The transmission shop drove it for 45 minutes trying to make it fail. Whatever that means, their words not mine. My buddy has been driving it to work and back. That’s not very far. But he is going to drive it back to me next weekend which is two hours on interstate if it doesn’t fail before then.
trust me I know. This thing will quit at some point. I just hope it gets us home when it does.
It easily could have been a stuck valve in the valve body or pump (burr or debris). These older control systems can only detect electrical faults and their ability to detect anything mechanical not working downstream from elecrical bits is severely limited.
Just when I thought it was over. The flashing OD light finally came back. About two weeks later. I called the transmission shop and they said to cycle the key on and off and the light should go out. They then said drive it again and see how long it takes to come back on. Seems to me that I remember the light being on immediately after start up before. Should the computer reset after a key cycle or not? I’m thinking not. The only way I was able to get rid of the blinking light in the past was to clear all codes in the computer with my code reader.
The transmission shop is very reluctant to tear down my transmission without a hard failure. They are concerned that this may be an intermittent electrical issue and a tranny rebuild may not fix the problem.
is there anything else I should be looking at to figure this thing out? Any particular data utilizing the AE analyzer?
Or should I just drive the thing clearing the code whenever it pops up and wait for it to fail completely?
Thank you so much. The light actually came on while my friend was driving the truck back to me. So he turned around and took it back to his house. I’ll have him drive it again and see if the light comes back right away.
just for my knowledge. If the light comes back on immediately upon starting, not even driving the truck. Does that mean anything of substance? Seems like I remember that being the case previously.
If the light comes on right away it means the problem exists and the PCM can see it as soon as it powers up. That usually means it's an electrical problem.
OK. Thanks for that information. I’m waiting for my buddy to cycle it and get back with me. It is possible that tranny fluid got on a connector somewhere when it leaked out.
